Read any good books lately?

5.16.2012

I'm seeking out a book recommendation. Any suggestions? I would like something just for fun and easy to read, preferably fiction (but if you had your mind blown by something that's fun to read and nonfiction, by all means) but I still want it to have depth and intrique.

Honestly, I have a list of "to read" books 20 miles long and a stack of unread books at home. And I've read a lot of books in the last year. But I have to get excited about a book to want to start it and at the moment I'm just not really excited about anything. Maybe an enthusiastic recommendation would do the trick? Usually when I hear about something and it peaks my interest, I run out and buy it. At the moment, even wandering through a book store I'm not feeling inspired to pick anything up. I must be in a dry spell.

Any ideas?

Also, as I am getting closer to motherhood I'm wondering if I should be reading things to prepare. Yes, I realize no one is ever really prepared for parenthood. But there's probably a lot of things about taking care of an infant that I could stand to learn about. And there must be books out there that help future moms get ready mentally and emotionally, right? Any of my pregnant or new mom friends out there have suggestions? Did you read anything? Do you wish you had? Poetry, fiction, pregnancy...anything?

So there's my plea. Recommendations anyone?

  1. Read "The Journal of Best Practices" by David Finch. I'll give you my exceptionally long, glowing recommendation later.

Also, baby books would be BabyWise (generally awesome, good plan to get your kid to sleep through the night)

and I heard good things about "Bringing up Bebe" also- read a really interesting recommendation on that blog I'm always telling you to read. :)

But if you have to pick one, read the David Finch one. Best book I've read in a year at least.

  2. Girlfriend's guide to pregnancy/motherhood are hilarious. What to expect the first year, also good. Please if you read babywise, take it with a grain of salt and remember that no two people are alike and babies are people, not robots we can program! I just had a really bad experience with it, but I know a couple moms who swear by it!

  3. I'm about to start reading "Loving our kids on purpose." By Danny Silk. I hear it's a good one. I am typically pretty anti parenting books, but lately I have felt the need to read up on parenting.

  4. I have just read an incredible political thriller ebook. I was browsing around at
amazon.com and found this ebook called The Cain Sanction, I read the preview and a
few chapters. It really was a page turner can’t put it down kind of book.
I didn’t know how it ends until the last sentence of the last page.. great read!!
Usually I don't read this genre but someone recommended it and WOW, loved it..

  5. Def be careful w/BabyWise, I've heard a ton of negative stuff about it... Mostly I read the "What to Expect the first year", and had email subscriptions to Gerber. Those two resources gave me a lot of helpful info and I referred to them often. Nothing beats personal advice from those who have been there, but that's the reading I did that i found most helpful. Along w/reading and advice, just pay attention to the cues from your baby. It takes a bit to get the hang of, but I know you'll do fine. :)

A book as he gets a little older that's been recommended by a lot of people I know (tho I've yet to read) is "Shepherding a Child's Heart". (can't remember the author)

  6. I'm with Amanda Sessions...I just finished The Cain Sanction by Mary McNally Ratto and just loved it!! It's well written, fast paced, very visual and thought provoking. I found it particularly interesting in an election year. It's a must have! Highly recommend it!
